On November 29th, 1864 (about fifteen years before Kiowa County was formed) an incident took place between the Native American’s and the Colorado Territory Militia. It was originally viewed as a victory and known as the battle of Sand Creek but as time passed the truth was revealed. The Colorado territory Militia actually destroyed an entire village of Native Americans including women and children. The name of The Sand Creek Massacre was chosen to mark the tragedy.

The Sand Creek Massacre site is currently a U.S. Historic Site operated by the U.S. Park Service. For more information about the site click on the Sand Creek Massacre image at the top.
